Tehillim – Psalms – Chapter 49

For the conductor, by the sons of Korah, a song.
2Hear this, all you peoples; hearken, all You inhabitants of the earth.
3Both the sons of “adam,” and the sons of “ish,” together rich and poor.
4My mouth shall speak wisdoms and the thoughts of my heart are understanding.
5I will bend my ear to a parable; with a lyre, I will solve my riddle.
6Why should I fear in days of misfortune? The iniquity of my heels surrounds me.
7Those who rely on their possessions and boast of their great wealth,
8-a brother cannot redeem a man, he cannot give his ransom to God.
9The redemption of their soul will be too dear, and unattainable forever.
10Will he live yet forever and not see the Pit?
11For he sees that wise men die, together a fool and a boorish man perish, and leave over their possessions to others.
12In their heart, their houses are forever, their dwellings are for every generation; they call by their names on plots of land.
13But man does not repose in his glory; he is compared to the silenced animals.
14This is their way; folly is theirs, and after them they will tell with their mouth forever.
15Like sheep, they are destined to the grave; death will devour them, and the upright will rule over them in the morning, and their form will outlast the grave as his dwelling place.
16But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave, for He shall take me forever.
17Fear not when a man becomes rich, when the honor of his house increases,
18For he will not take anything in his death; his glory will not descend after him.
19Because in his lifetime he blesses himself, but [all] will praise you, for you will benefit yourself.
20You shall come to the generation of his forefathers; to eternity they will not see light.
21Man is in his glory but he does not understand; he is compared to the silenced animals.

Tehillim – Psalms – Chapter 50

1A song of Asaph; God, God the Lord, spoke and called to the earth, from the rising of the sun until its setting.

3Our God shall come and not be silent; fire shall devour before Him, and around Him it storms furiously.
4He shall call to the heavens above and to the earth to avenge His people.

11I know all the fowl of the mountains, and the creeping things of the field are with Me.
12If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are Mine.
13Will I eat the flesh of bulls or do I drink the blood of he-goats?
14Slaughter for God a confession and pay the Most High your vows.
15And call to Me on a day of distress; I will rescue you and you will honor Me.

Salmo 49

(3) Viene nuestro Dios, y no guarda silencio.

La Plegaria Robada / The Stolen Prayer

A Midrashic Account

By Lazer Gurko

When Moses ascended to the supernal abode, he heard the angels singing the words “Baruch shemkevod malchuto le’olam va’ed” (“Blessed be the name of the glory of His Kingdom forever and ever”), and upon his descent he taught it to Israel. Why does Israel not proclaim these words openly [but rather whisper them in an undertone during the daily Shemaservice]? Says Rabbi Asi, “This is comparable to a man who stole a gem from the royal palace and gave it to his wife. ‘I implore you,’ he said to her, ‘never wear this gem in public, only in the privacy of your home.’ However, on Yom Kippur, when they are pure as angels, they proclaim these words loudly.”1

On the surface, this Midrash raises more questions than it answers. If this prayer belongs to the angels, why did Moses steal it? If we announce the theft on Yom Kippur, what is the purpose of further stealth after Yom Kippur? How does Yom Kippur enhance our purity?

The Jew and G‑d

Immediately following the above account, the Midrash goes on to explain that there are five levels to the soul, of which the fifth and highest is yechidah, from the root yachid, which translates as “alone” or “unique.” The Midrash tells of the intimate connection between G‑d and the soul, especially on the fifth and highest level. “Just as G‑d is alone . . . so too is the soul alone.”

The High Priest and the Angels

Once a year, on Yom Kippur, the high priest would enter the Temple’s innermost sanctuary, known as the Holy of Holies. The Jerusalem Talmud
