AI & The Scales of Justice / La IA y las Escalas de la Justicia

Can Artificial Intelligence truly represent the perfect scales of justice, or does its success depend entirely on human beings?

This is not merely a technical question. It is a profound question about our own moral compass.

In the Torah, we discover that true justice is neither cold nor rigid. Justice and mercy are not opposing forces, but rather two sides of the same coin, unified under the deep concept of Tzedek (צֶדֶק) and Tzedakah (צְדָקָה).

Tzedek signifies righteousness, fairness, and equity. From this same root springs Tzedakah, which is not mere sentimental charity, but an act of restorative justice: providing for those in need or acting with compassion is not a favor, but an ethical duty to restore balance to the world.

We see this clearly throughout the Parashiot:

  The Cities of Refuge teach us that strict justice is tempered with mercy when there is no harmful intent, prioritizing the preservation of human life (Pikuach Nefesh).

  The agricultural laws for the vulnerable (Peah, Leket) transform support for the poor into a mandatory act of justice.

  Tzedek tzedek tirdof” (“Justice, justice shall you pursue”) reminds us that justice must be pursued through just and humane means.

The Sages of the Talmud explain that the Almighty created the world by combining Middat HaDin (strict judgment) and Middat HaRachamim (mercy). Only their synthesis — Tzedek — allows the world to endure.


The Mirror of Artificial Intelligence

This ancient principle sheds powerful light on today’s crucial debate surrounding Artificial Intelligence.

AI possesses no moral consciousness or ethical intentionality of its own. It is an extraordinarily powerful mirror reflecting whatever human beings instill into it: data, objectives, constraints, and values.

If we feed it a cold, relentless “justice” without context, we will create efficient yet potentially destructive systems.

But when creators design it with wisdom  integrating Tzedek, compassion, and respect for human life AI can become an extraordinary ally in making fairer, more contextual, and more humane decisions.

An Urgent Call to the New Generation

To you, the young minds writing the code of tomorrow, we say with clarity and hope:

You are not just creating algorithms. You are shaping the moral balance of the world.

AI will not replace that moral balance. The scale remains, and will always remain, in human hands.

If we build technology imbued with the spirit of Tzedek — righteousness intertwined with mercy, context, and the protection of life — we will not only prevent harm, but we will elevate the human condition.

As our tradition teaches:

“You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.”

Let us build the future with wisdom, with reverent awe, and with an absolute commitment to preserving and elevating creation.

The destiny and coexistence between human beings and Artificial Intelligence depend on the ethical framework with which we build this technology.

¿Puede la Inteligencia Artificial representar realmente las escalas perfectas de justicia, o su éxito depende completamente del ser humano?

Esta no es solo una pregunta técnica. Es una pregunta profunda sobre nuestra propia brújula moral.

En la Torá descubrimos que la verdadera justicia no es fría ni rígida. La justicia y la misericordia no son fuerzas opuestas, sino dos caras de una misma moneda, unidas bajo el profundo concepto de Tzedek (צֶדֶק) y Tzedaká (צְדָקָה).

Tzedek significa rectitud, equidad y justicia. De la misma raíz surge Tzedaká, que no es mera caridad sentimental, sino un acto de justicia restitutiva: proveer al necesitado o actuar con compasión no es un favor, sino un deber ético para restaurar el equilibrio del mundo.

Lo vemos claramente a lo largo de las Parashiot:

Las Ciudades de Refugio nos enseñan que la justicia estricta se mitiga con misericordia cuando no hay intención dañina, priorizando la preservación de la vida humana (Pikuaj Nefesh).

Las leyes agrícolas para los vulnerables (Peáh, Leket) convierten el apoyo al pobre en un acto obligatorio de justicia.

• “Tzedek tzedek tirdof” (“Justicia, justicia perseguirás”) nos recuerda que la justicia debe buscarse por medios justos y humanos.

La IA no posee conciencia moral ni intencionalidad ética propia. Es un espejo extraordinariamente poderoso que refleja todo lo que los seres humanos depositamos en ella: datos, objetivos, restricciones y valores.

Si la alimentamos con una “justicia” fría y despiadada, sin contexto, crearemos sistemas eficientes pero potencialmente destructivos.

Pero cuando los creadores la diseñan con sabiduría —integrando Tzedek, compasión y respeto por la vida humana—, la IA puede convertirse en una aliada extraordinaria para tomar decisiones más justas, más contextuales y más humanas.

Un Llamado Urgente a la Nueva Generación

A ustedes, los jóvenes que hoy escriben el código del mañana, les decimos con claridad y esperanza:

Ustedes no están creando solo algoritmos. Están configurando la balanza moral del mundo.

La IA no reemplazará esa balanza. La balanza sigue, y seguirá siempre, en manos humanas.

Si construimos la tecnología impregnada del espíritu de Tzedek —rectitud entrelazada con misericordia, contexto y protección de la vida no solo evitaremos el daño, sino que elevaremos la condición humana.

Como enseña nuestra tradición:

“No estás obligado a terminar la obra, pero tampoco eres libre de desentenderte de ella.”

Construyamos el futuro con sabiduría, con temor reverente y con un compromiso absoluto de preservar y elevar la creación.

El destino y la convivencia entre los seres humanos y la Inteligencia Artificial dependen del marco ético con el que construyamos esta tecnología.

Between Progress and Prudence: Reflections on Human Adaptation and Our Technological Future

The Creation, this vast and complex ecosystem we inhabit was designed for the delight and comfort of humanity. Yet, in our pursuit to thrive within it, we have demonstrated an astonishing capacity for adaptation. From the invention of air conditioning, which defies heatwaves, to the sophistication of mobile devices that warn us of earthquakes minutes before they strike, human ingenuity remains our greatest tool for resilience.

Today, Artificial Intelligence stands as an indispensable ally, shortening processes, optimizing resources, and potentially solving the enigmas that threaten our well-being. However, we must ask ourselves: Are we balancing this progress with the fundamental protection of our human integrity?

The Line Between Environmental Management and Fanaticism

It is concerning to observe how certain environmental policies in Europe have morphed into approaches that, far from protecting, compromise human physical and emotional well-being. The prohibition of air conditioning in public transport, for example, ignores a basic biological reality: the human body has physiological limits in the face of extreme heat. When a driver faints due to thermal stress, the system does not just fail it endangers the lives of passengers and pedestrians.

Similarly, in winter, the prohibition of using salt on roads to prevent falls under the guise of soil protectionis leaving a painful trail of fractures and severe injuries, especially among the elderly. When regulations ignore immediate human safety in favor of a rigid environmental ideal, the result is preventable suffering. We often search for someone to blame, but it is the policy itself that requires an urgent recalibration.

AI and the Infrastructure Challenge

Beyond energy efficiency, we must visualize how this technology translates into tangible well-being. This surplus heat, which today is dissipated as thermal waste, holds incalculable value for our communities:

 Heating Homes in Winter: Through thermal distribution networks, this heat can be circulated via pipelines to heat our homes, allowing families to face the harshness of winter with greater comfort and lower energy costs.

 Boosting Agriculture: Channeling this heat into specialized greenhouses allows for the optimization of crop cycles, ensuring a constant production of fresh food even in the most adverse climatic conditions

Parallel to these climate challenges, valid concerns have emerged regarding the thermal impact of the data centers that power Artificial Intelligence. It has been noted that these processing cores generate a thermal load that affects the ground and the local environment.

We cannot allow the engine that helps us advance to harm the very ground that sustains us. It is imperative that tech companies be transparent and proactive in relocating and optimizing these centers. They must be installed in optimal geographic areas where thermal dissipation is efficient and environmental impact is minimized through cutting-edge cooling technologies.

Hopeful Solutions: A Two-Fold Path

Faced with this scenario, I asked AI: Is there an immediate alternative while we work on long-term strategies? The answers are highly encouraging and prove that when technology is placed at the service of preservation, the horizon changes:

1. Liquid Immersion Cooling: Moving servers from air-cooled systems to tanks of dielectric fluid. This process is significantly more efficient, reduces energy consumption, and allows heat to be captured for reuse in urban heating.

2. Edge Computing: Decentralizing large data centers into smaller, distributed units. This reduces the thermal load at any single point and improves system latency.

3. Regenerative Energy Architecture: Designing data centers that operate as “batteries” for the local grid, leveraging renewable energy sources that align with climatic demands.

As citizens, we have the right and the duty to demand transparency regarding how this transition is being executed. We want to see, know, and understand the relocation plans for these infrastructures. Technological progress should not be a “blank check,” but a responsible alliance that respects our human dignity and protects our shared home.
