Jerusalem: The Heart and Soul of Israel

Jerusalem is not merely a city; it is the spiritual epicenter of the world and the constant heartbeat of a people who, throughout millennia, never ceased to look toward its walls. As it is rightly said: Jerusalem is the soul of Israel.

The Promise of the Eternal

The connection to this sacred land begins with the Divine Word. In the Book of Psalms, we find the reminder of eternal faithfulness:

If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill! If I do not remember you, let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth—if I do not exalt Jerusalem above my chief joy.

— Psalms 137:5-6

The Eternal has established His promises upon this territory, designating it as a meeting place between the earthly and the divine—an inheritance that transcends time and borders.

The Territory of the Holy Temple and the Western Wall

The Temple Mount is the most sacred site, the space where the Divine Presence, the Shechinah, manifested in ancient times. Although the Temple no longer stands in its physical splendor, its essence remains intact.

Before the Western Wall (Kotel), centuries of history merge into tears and prayers. It is there where we weep for what was, but also where we place our deepest hopes. Every stone of the Wall safeguards the secrets and yearnings of millions who, after generations of exile, finally returned home.

Solomon’s Prayer: A House for All Nations

From its very origin, the purpose of Jerusalem was inclusion and universal blessing. Upon dedicating the First Temple, King Solomon offered a prophetic prayer, asking the Eternal to hear everyone who came to His house:

Moreover, concerning a foreigner, who is not of Your people Israel, but has come from a far country for Your name’s sake… hear in heaven Your dwelling place… that all peoples of the earth may know Your name.

— 1 Kings 8:41-43

Solomon envisioned Jerusalem as a beacon of light; a spiritual shield where any person, regardless of their nation of origin, could find refuge, comfort, and an answer from the Creator.

Here are some of the most direct verses where the Eternal confirms His choice of Jerusalem as His eternal dwelling place:

Psalms 132:13-14

For the Lord has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His dwelling place: “This is My resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it.

Zechariah 8:3

Thus says the Lord: “I will return to Zion, and dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be called the City of Truth, the Mountain of the Lord of hosts, the Holy Mountain.

Psalms 76:2

In Salem also is His tabernacle, and His dwelling place in Zion.

Conclusion

Today we celebrate Jerusalem not only for its history of stone and siege, but for its spiritual victory. It is the city of peace, the place of fulfilled promises, and the eternal refuge for those who seek holiness.
