17th of Tamuz: From Brokenness to Redemption

A Letter to the Generation of Return

Beloved children, brothers, and sages of this generation that today inhabits the land of our fathers:

Today is the 17th of Tamuz. The sun rises, and our innermost being feels the rigor of the fast. We remember the day when the first Tablets of the Law, written by the finger of the Eternal, were broken; the day when the walls of Jerusalem were breached and the enemy besieged our sanctuary.

The prophets warned us with grief: when Israel goes astray, when it distances itself from the Source of Life to pursue what does not profit, the natural result is the hiding of the Light and the arrival of adversity.

Like a father who corrects his child with love, the Eternal allowed us to stumble so that we might learn.

He told us: “You did wrong, you suffered exile, but now you have learned.” The punishment was never destruction; it was education. The exile was the great school of dispersion.

And look around you today. Your eyes are seeing what generations of our elders could only dream of amidst tears.

You are living the fulfillment of the divine promises: “I will gather you from among the nations from where I scattered them.”

You have seen a nation born in a single day. The land that lay desolate today flourishes beneath your feet.

Therefore, this fast must not be merely a day of passive sadness, but of active introspection. If straying from the Torah and baseless divisions tore down our walls, it is the return to wisdom, justice, and righteousness that will rebuild them forever.

To this generation that witnesses the miracles of return, I say: act with the maturity of one who has learned the lesson of history. The Holy One, Blessed Be He, is slow to anger, immense in kindness, and infinitely merciful. He is essentially Good.

Just as the prophecies of the fall were fulfilled with precision, with that same mathematical and spiritual certainty, the promises of the final redemption are being fulfilled.

May this 17th of Tamuz transform the memory of brokenness into the strength to build a holy, united, and wise society. The radiance has begun to return; it is up to us to walk toward it.

Eternal Promises of Return, Strength, and Redemption:

1. The promise of return from the dispersion:

For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land.- Ezekiel 36:24

2. The roar of the lioness in exile:

Look, a people rises like a lioness, and lifts itself up like a lion; it shall not lie down until it devours the prey, and drinks the blood of the slain. – Numbers 23:24

(This powerful passage evokes precisely that awakening of the children of exile who, upon seeing their people under siege, rise with spiritual and diplomatic fierceness before the nations of the Earth to intercede for Israel, proving that the Jewish soul is never extinguished, regardless of the distance).

3. The final recognition of the nations:

Thus says the Eternal of Hosts: In those days ten men from every language of the nations shall grasp the sleeve of a Jewish man, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you. –Zechariah 8:23

And it shall come to pass that from one New Moon to another, and from one Shabbat to another, all flesh shall come to worship before Me, says the Eternal. – Isaiah 60:23 (Isaías 66:23)

 

 

 

17 de Tamuz: Del Quebranto a la Redención

Una carta a la generación del retorno

Amados hijos, hermanos y sabios de esta generación que hoy habita la tierra de nuestros padres:

Hoy es 17 de Tamuz. El sol se eleva y nuestras entrañas sienten el rigor del ayuno. Recordamos el día en que las primeras Tablas de la Ley, escritas por el dedo del Eterno,  fueron quebrantadas; el día en que las murallas de Jerusalem fueron rotas y el enemigo sitió nuestro santuario.

Los profetas nos lo advirtieron con dolor: cuando Israel se desvía, cuando se aleja de la Fuente de Vida para ir en pos de lo que no le aprovecha, el resultado natural es el ocultamiento de la Luz y la llegada de la adversidad.

Como un padre que corrige a su hijo con amor, el Eterno nos permitió tropezar para que aprendiéramos.

Nos dijo: “Hiciste lo incorrecto, sufriste el exilio, pero ahora has aprendido”. El castigo nunca fue destrucción; fue educación. El exilio fue la gran escuela de la dispersión.

Y miren a su alrededor hoy. Sus ojos están viendo lo que generaciones de nuestros mayores solo pudieron soñar entre lágrimas.

Están viviendo el cumplimiento de las promesas divinas: “Los regresaré de entre las naciones desde donde los esparcí”.

Han visto a una nación nacer en un solo día. La tierra que estuvo desolada hoy florece bajo sus pies.

Por lo tanto, este ayuno no debe ser solo un día de tristeza pasiva, sino de introspección activa. Si el alejamiento de la Torá y las divisiones infundadas derribaron nuestras murallas, es el retorno a la sabiduría, a la justicia y a la rectitud lo que las reconstruirá para siempre.

A esta generación que ve los milagros del retorno, les digo: actúen con la madurez de quien ha aprendido la lección de la historia. El Santo, Bendito Sea, es lento para la ira, inmenso en bondad e infinitamente misericordioso. Él es esencialmente Bueno.

Así como las profecías de la caída se cumplieron con precisión, con esa misma certeza matemática y espiritual se están cumpliendo las promesas de la redención final.

Que este 17 de Tamuz transformemos el recuerdo del quebranto en la fuerza para construir una sociedad santa, unida y sabia. El resplandor ha comenzado a retornar; nos corresponde a nosotros caminar a su encuentro.

Promesas eternas de Retorno, Fortaleza y Redención:

1. La promesa del retorno desde la dispersión:

Porque yo os tomaré de las naciones, y os recogeré de todas las tierras, y os traeré a vuestra propia tierra. Ezequiel 36:24

2. El rugido de la leona en el exilio:

He aquí el pueblo que como leona se levantará, y como león se erguirá; no se echará hasta que devore la presa, y beba la sangre de los heridos. –Números 23:24

(Este poderoso pasaje evoca precisamente ese despertar de los hijos del exilio que, al ver a su pueblo bajo asedio, se levantan con fiereza espiritual y diplomática ante las naciones de la Tierra para interceder por Israel, demostrando que el alma Judía jamás se apaga, sin importar la distancia).

3. El reconocimiento final de las naciones:

Así ha dicho el Eterno de los Ejércitos: En aquellos días acontecerá que diez hombres de las naciones de toda lengua tomarán del manto a un Judío, diciendo: Iremos con vosotros, porque hemos oído que Dios está con vosotros.   – Zacarías 8:23

Y sucederá que de mes en mes, y de Shabat en Shabat, vendrá toda carne a adorar delante de mí , dice el Eterno. – Isaías 66:23
