8 He remembered His covenant forever, the word He had commanded to the thousandth generation, חזָכַ֣ר לְעוֹלָ֣ם בְּרִית֑וֹ דָּבָ֥ר צִ֜וָּ֗ה לְאֶ֣לֶף דּֽוֹר:
9 Which He had made with Abraham, and His oath to Isaac, טאֲשֶׁ֣ר כָּ֖רַת אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֑ם וּשְׁב֖וּעָת֣וֹ לְיִשְׂחָֽק:
10 And He set it up to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant,

Overview

The prophet Zechariah was one of the last biblical prophets (along with Chaggai and Malachi). Living at the time when a group of Jews had just recently returned to Jerusalemand built the Temple, the challenges of the time can be appreciated through the lens of his prophecies. A defining part of the haftarah is his vision of a golden menorah. This is the connection to the portion of Behaalotecha, which begins with the mitzvah of kindling the menorah in the Tabernacle.
