Israeli Memorial Day begins /Comienza el Memorial en Israel

60 IDF soldiers killed since last Memorial Day. 3177 Jews murdered in terror attacks since Israel’s establishment, 11 over the past year.

Yom Hazikaron in Israel is a day of personal mourning, collective grief, and national catharsis. Our historic return to our homeland has demanded a steep toll of human heroism as we struggle to defend our people and stabilize our sovereignty. Jews are no strangers to historical challenge and the suffering it exacts. However Yom Hazkaron provides three very important changes in memorializing our matyrs.

Yom Hazikaron en Israel es un día de luto personal, pena colectiva y catarsis nacional. Nuestro regreso histórico a nuestra patria ha exigido una fuerte carga de heroísmo humano mientras luchamos por defender a nuestro pueblo y estabilizar nuestra soberanía. Los judíos no son ajenos al desafío histórico y al sufrimiento que exige. Sin embargo Yom Hazkaron proporciona tres cambios muy importantes en la conmemoración de nuestros mártires.

Firstly we mourn as families and communities but for the first time in 2 millennia we mourn as a state. Despite our differences of ethnicity, religion, affluence and political ideology we cluster together and stand as one unified family – both in our collective sadness and in the warmth we try to extend to families who have paid this immense price for our return. Our mourning is collective and institutional rather than local and communal.

En primer lugar lloramos como familias y comunidades, pero por primera vez en 2 milenios nos lamentamos como un Estado. A pesar de nuestras diferencias etnicas, religión, afluencia e ideología política nos agrupamos y nos unimos como una familia unificada, tanto en nuestra tristeza colectiva como en la calidez que tratamos de extender a las familias que han pagado este inmenso precio por nuestro regreso. Nuestro duelo es colectivo e institucional más que local y comunitario.

Secondly our mourning is both bitter and sweet; we feel clouds of sadness darkening our horizons but we sense an overpowering radiance illuminating the canvas upon which these clouds are sketched. Unlike past tragedies we sense imminent and palpable results and outcomes. We witness the modern miracle of the State of Israel as our beloved country advances in almost every sector and we assume our rightful position as a leader of nations We sense the Book of Tanach reopened as the passages of prophecy literally flutter off the page and into our reality. The ultimate price that so many have paid has yielded an opportunity to re-build our people in its ancestral land and its renewed history. As such the transition from this day to Yom Haatzmaut – which to many may seem foreign – is seamless and integrated.

En segundo lugar, nuestro duelo es amargo y dulce; Sentimos nubes de tristeza oscureciendo nuestros horizontes pero sentimos una radiación abrumadora que ilumina el lienzo sobre el que se esbozan estas nubes. A diferencia de las tragedias pasadas, sentimos resultados y resultados inminentes y palpables. Presenciamos el milagro moderno del Estado de Israel cuando nuestro amado país avanza en casi todos los sectores y asumimos nuestra legítima posición como líder de naciones. Finally it is a day not only to remember the heroes who have given their lives for their history. It is also a day to celebrate all those who continue to risk life and limb on behalf of our nation, who bear uniforms with Jewish symbols and who remind us that we are now protected by our own.

The pinnacle of this experience occurs at 11:00 AM in Israel when throngs gather in local cemeteries as well as the national cemetery for soldiers at Har Herzl in Jerusalem. Flags are flown as half mast but voices are hearts raised at full throttle. Deep tears of grief mingle with deep pride.

We stand at silently at attention as names are recited in prayer for our heroes. We plead with the Almighty to accelerate the final steps of history and ease its passage. We huddle with families visiting the graves of their fallen soldiers and listen to their stories and join in their fervent psalms. Finally we punctuate our pride and pathos with a common anthem, Hatikvah, followed by the steadfast faith of Ani Ma’amin.

Escuchamos con atención como se recitan en oración los nombres de nuestros héroes. Pedimos al Todopoderoso que acelere los últimos pasos de la historia y facilite su paso. As the wail of sirens to mark a minute of silence faded away Sunday evening, President Reuven Rivlin opened the official Memorial Day ceremony for the fallen, speaking of the price the country pays for its freedom and the debt still owed to those missing in action.

The Hamas terror group claims to be holding the bodies of two IDF soldiers Hadar Golding and Oren Shaul, killed during the 2014 war in the Gaza Strip. Returning the soldiers’ remains, and the cost it may entail in negotiations with Hamas, is a painful issue of debate in Israeli society.
