The Golan Heights
In Biblical times, the Golan Heights was referred to as “Bashan;” the word “Golan” apparently derives from the biblical city of “Golan in Bashan,” (Deuteronomy 4:43, Joshua 21:27). The area was assigned to the tribe of Manasseh (Joshua 13:29-31)

| 29 And Moses gave inheritance to the half tribe of Manasseh; and this was for the half tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families. |

כטוַיִּתֵּ֣ן מֹשֶׁ֔ה לַֽחֲצִ֖י שֵׁ֣בֶט מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה וַיְהִ֗י לַֽחֲצִ֛י מַטֵ֥ה בְנֵֽי־מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה לְמִשְׁפְּחוֹתָֽם: |
| 30 And their border was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the villages of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities; |

לוַיְהִ֣י גְבוּלָ֗ם מִמַּחֲנַ֨יִם כָּֽל־הַבָּשָׁ֜ן כָּֽל־מַמְלְכ֣וּת | ע֣וֹג מֶֽלֶךְ־הַבָּשָׁ֗ן וְכָל־חַוֹּ֥ת יָאִ֛יר אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּבָּשָׁ֖ן שִׁשִּׁ֥ים עִֽיר: |
| 31 And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, to one half the children of Machir according to their families. |

לאוַֽחֲצִ֚י הַגִּלְעָד֙ וְעַשְׁתָּר֣וֹת וְאֶדְרֶ֔עִי עָרֵ֛י מַמְלְכ֥וּת ע֖וֹג בַּבָּשָׁ֑ן לִבְנֵ֚י מָכִיר֙ בֶּן־מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה לַֽחֲצִ֥י בְנֵֽי־מָכִ֖יר לְמִשְׁפְּחוֹתָֽם: |
Josué 13(29 – 31)
(29) Moisés dio herencia a la media tribu de Manases y fue para ala media tribu de los hijos de Manasés según sus familias.
(30) Y sus fronteras eran desde Mahanaím, todo Basán, todo el reino de og rey de Basán y todos los poblados de Jair(Yair) en Basán, sesenta ciudades;
(31) y media Galaad, y Astarot, y Edrey, las ciudades del reino de Og en Basán, eran para los hijos de Maquir (Majir) hijo de Manases, (es decir) para la mitad de los hijos de maquis según sus familias.
