Tehillim (Psalms) – Chapter 49

1 For the conductor, by the sons of Korah, a song.
2 Hear this, all you peoples; hearken, all You inhabitants of the earth.
3 Both the sons of “Adam,” and the sons of “Ish,” together rich and poor.
4 My mouth shall speak wisdoms and the thoughts of my heart are understanding.
5 I will bend my ear to a parable; with a lyre, I will solve my riddle.
6 Why should I fear in days of misfortune? The iniquity of my heels surrounds me.
7 Those who rely on their possessions and boast of their great wealth,
8 -a brother cannot redeem a man, he cannot give his ransom to God.
9 The redemption of their soul will be too dear, and unattainable forever.
10 Will he live yet forever and not see the Pit?
11 For he sees that wise men die, together a fool and a boorish man perish, and leave over their possessions to others.
12 In their heart, their houses are forever, their dwellings are for every generation; they call by their names on plots of land.
13 But man does not repose in his glory; he is compared to the silenced animals.
14 This is their way; folly is theirs, and after them they will tell with their mouth forever.
15 Like sheep, they are destined to the grave; death will devour them, and the upright will rule over them in the morning, and their form will outlast the grave as his dwelling place.
16 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave, for He shall take me forever.
17 Fear not when a man becomes rich, when the honor of his house increases,
18 For he will not take anything in his death; his glory will not descend after him.
19 Because in his lifetime he blesses himself, but [all] will praise you, for you will benefit yourself.
20 You shall come to the generation of his forefathers; to eternity they will not see light.
21 Man is in his glory but he does not understand; he is compared to the silenced animals.

Tehillim (Psalms) – Chapter 50

1 A song of Asaph; God, God the Lord, spoke and called to the earth, from the rising of the sun until its setting.
2 From Zion, the finery of beauty, God appeared.
3 Our God shall come and not be silent; fire shall devour before Him, and around Him it storms furiously.
4 He shall call to the heavens above and to the earth to avenge His people.
5 Gather to Me My devoted ones, who made a covenant with Me over a sacrifice.
6 And the heavens will tell His righteousness, for He is a God Who judges forever.
7 Hearken, My people, and I will speak, Israel, and I will admonish you; God, even your God am I.
8 I will not reprove you concerning your sacrifices, neither are your burnt offerings before Me constantly.
9 I will not take from your household a bull, from your pens any goats.
10 For all the beasts of the forest are Mine, the behemoth of the thousand mountains.
11 I know all the fowl of the mountains, and the creeping things of the field are with Me.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are Mine.
13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls or do I drink the blood of he-goats?
14 Slaughter for God a confession and pay the Most High your vows.
15And call to Me on a day of distress; I will rescue you and you will honor Me.
16 But to the wicked man God said, “For what reason do you recount My statutes, and bring up My covenant on Your mouth?
17 For you hated discipline and threw My words behind you.
18 If you saw a thief, you agreed [to be] with him, and with adulterers is your portion.
19 You let loose your mouth for evil, and you accustomed your tongue to deceit.
20 You sit and talk against your brother; you slander your mother’s son.
21 You did these and I remained silent; you thought that I would be like you. I will contend with you and set up before your eyes.
22 Understand this now, you who forget God, lest I tear [you] to pieces, and there will be no one to save [you].
23 One who slaughters a confession sacrifice honors Me, and [I will] prepare the way; I will show him the salvation of God.”

Tehillim (Psalms) – Chapter 51

1 For the conductor, a song of David.
2 When Nathan the prophet came to him when he went to Bath-sheba.
3 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your kindness; according to Your great mercies, erase my transgressions.
4 Wash me thoroughly of my iniquity, and purify me of my sin.
5 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
6 Against You alone have I sinned, and I have done what is evil in Your sight, in order that You be justified in Your conduct, and right in Your judgment.
7 Behold, with iniquity I was formed, and with sin my mother conceived me.
8 Behold, You desired that truth be in the hidden places, and in the concealed part You teach me wisdom.
9 Purify me with a hyssop, and I will become pure; wash me, and I will become whiter than snow.
10 Make me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that You crushed exult.
11 Hide Your countenance from my sins, and erase all my iniquities.
12 Create for me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
13 Do not cast me away from before You, and do not take Your holy spirit from me.
14 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and let a noble spirit support me.
15 I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will return to You.
16 Save me from blood, O God, the God of my salvation; let my tongue sing praises of Your charity.
17 O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will recite Your praise.
18 For You do not wish a sacrifice, or I should give it; You do not desire a burnt offering.
19 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; O God, You will not despise a broken and crushed heart.

21 Then You will desire sacrifices of righteousness, a burnt offering and a whole offering; then they will offer up bulls on Your altar.

Tehillim (Psalms) – Chapter 52

1 For the conductor, a maskil of David.
2 When Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul and said to him, “David came to the house of Ahimelech.”
3 Why do you boast of evil, you mighty man? God’s kindness is constant.
4 Your tongue plots destruction, as a sharpened razor, working deceit.
5 You loved evil more than good, falsehood more than speaking righteousness forever.
6 You loved all destructive words, a deceitful tongue.
7 God, too, shall tear you down forever; He will break you and pluck you from [your] tent, and uproot you from the land of the living forever.
8 And righteous men will see and fear, and laugh at him.
9 “Behold the man who does not place his strength in God and trusts his great wealth; he strengthened himself in his wickedness.”
10 But I am like a fresh olive tree in the house of God; I have trusted in the kindness of God forever and ever.
11 I will thank You forever and ever when You have done [this], and I will hope for Your name, for it is good, in the presence of Your devoted ones.

1 For the conductor, on machalath, a maskil of David.
2 The fool said in his heart, “There is no God”; they have dealt corruptly; they have committed abominable injustice; no one does good.

1 For the conductor, on neginoth, a maskil of David.
2 When the Ziphim came and said to Saul, “Is not David hiding with us?”

8 With generosity, I will slaughter sacrifices to You; I will thank Your name, O Lord, because it is good.
9 For He saved me from every distress, and my eye saw my enemies.

The Day of Embrace

People know Yom Kippur as a day of repentance and forgiveness. But Yom Kippur takes you far beyond that.

Because repentance means regretting who you’ve become. Yom Kippur is a day when you are embraced for who you truly are.

You are a pure, divine soul. Today, in that embrace, you experience the bond that divine soul has with G‑d, and you want to live that way.

So you rid yourself of some unbecoming things you picked up on the road, and you return home, picking up some beautiful mitzvahs along the way.

On Yom Kippur you return home to the One Who embraces you because you are who you are.
